Chapter History
The chapter was chartered in August 1988 as the Sedona Red Rockettes and incorporated as an Arizona nonprofit in early 1990. It was founded by Sedona pilot Barbara Vickers, who earned her private pilot certificate and instrument rating in 1988–89, raced in the 1996 Air Race Classic (placing seventh), and was the first woman named Pilot of the Year by Civil Air Patrol Squadron 205. Over the years, members have airmarked local airports, hosted fly-ins, raised money for student pilot scholarships, published the Sedona Skyline newsletter, and worked on a history of Sedona-area women pilots. Today the chapter goes by Sedona 99s.
About The Ninety-Nines
The Ninety-Nines was founded on November 2, 1929, at Curtiss Field on Long Island, New York, when 99 of the 117 licensed women pilots in the United States joined to support one another and advance aviation. Amelia Earhart was elected its first president in 1931. Today it has thousands of members in more than 40 countries. It offers scholarships, runs aviation education and safety programs, promotes world fellowship through flight, and preserves the history of women in aviation, including at its headquarters and Museum of Women Pilots in Oklahoma City.
